Join us in Parliament Square: Let’s make Retrofit a national priority
Written by Charlie Baxter, retrofit volunteer of the Islington Climate Centre.
On 9th July 2025 (Wed), thousands will gather in Parliament Square to send a clear message: we need urgent action on home retrofit now.
This national day of action, backed by Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, local climate groups, and concerned citizens across the UK, demands the leadership and investment needed to future-proof our homes, cut emissions, and tackle fuel poverty. Our community in Islington will be right at the heart of it.

Why Retrofit Matters, and Why Now
Retrofitting our homes: improving insulation, stopping heat loss, upgrading heating systems, is one of the most effective steps we can take to address the climate crisis. But it’s about much more than carbon.
In Islington and beyond, far too many people live in cold, damp, energy-inefficient homes. That’s a public health crisis, a social justice issue, and a driver of soaring energy bills. Retrofitting is a win-win: it slashes carbon emissions and improves quality of living.
Yet, government action has been patchy at best. We need clear policies, proper funding, and a national strategy, not just warm words.
Our Local Action
On 19th June (Thu), the Islington Climate Centre is hosting a People’s Assembly on Retrofit to raise awareness, share knowledge, and galvanise action.
The Islington Climate Change Committee, together with Greenpeace South Islington, is also helping lead the charge locally. On 9th July, we’ll be in Parliament Square to stand with thousands across the country.
We’re thrilled to share that our MP, Emily Thornberry, will be joining us. When I met her at Islington Town Hall a few Saturdays ago, alongside Andy from Greenpeace, she pledged her full support. Her presence is a reminder that grassroots momentum can push political action.
What You Can Do
This movement needs all of us.Whether you’re a climate activist, a parent worried about your children’s future, a tenant struggling with bills, or simply a concerned citizen, we all have a role to play.
• Attend the People’s Assembly on Retrofit in Islington on 19th June 2025
• Join the Parliament Square mass lobby on 9th July 2025
• Spread the word in your community, building, or workplace
• Bring a friend. Make a sign. Be heard.
Let’s Make It Happen
We have the solutions. We have the public support. What we need now is the political will.
Join us to make retrofit a national priority for Islington, for the UK, and for the climate.
